My Blue Piano

A father/son project with Colby Smith

In 2018 we moved into our Florida home, and shortly afterwards our son Colby came up with this used Haines spinet piano he salvaged out of an old house he was working on. It wasn’t much to look at, but it was FREE….and we decided to try and get it working again. The old wheels were shot, so we rebuilt the front legs with some 2X4’s and added some nice new wheels. The previous owner of our house had left behind several gallons of blue paint….so we put that to use.

When we got the cabinet all painted up we proceeded to try and get it in tune. This required a crash course in piano tuning and some ear training. Eventually we got the instrument sounding pretty good.

In January of 2021 I was fooling around with my mahogany Martin guitar after a string change, and this song arrived out of the blue.

I made this recording in my home studio….known as Mellow Yellow Sound….in Gulfport by overdubbing vocal, guitar, piano, and a synth lead part with my Yamaha keyboard. It sounded like this:
